Volunteering A non-profit organisation such as the Brain Injury Group (BIG), cannot attain its ultimate goal without the help of volunteers. Volunteers are those unselfish people who give up their time, skills and money to benefit those who do not have the ability to lead a fulfilled life. BIG values the assistance of its volunteers, called HelpingHands, who are issued special HelpingHand cards. BIG offers the following opportunities for HelpingHands to become part of bettering the lives of the brain injured community:
ü Care-giver Assistance. The brain-injured person’s primary care-giver often has a 24/7 responsibility. A BIG HelpingHand can assist the care-giver with practical tasks such transport, shopping, caregiving tasks or giving the care-giver some free time. Care-givers will identify specific needs. ü BIGSharing. Brain injured people, care-givers or compassionate people who feel that their experiences can benefit others can play an invaluable role by sharing those experiences with other people in the brain injured community. ü BIG-Requirements. BIG needs HelpingHands with specific skills for the following: · BIG Advisors o Serve BIG in an advisory capacity in the medical, legal, social development, marketing communication field. BIG will request input from BIGAdvisors in terms of BIG’s operations or campaigns. o Facilitating BIGCirlces. BIGCircles or Support Groups deliver grassroots support to the brain-injured community. BIG needs HelpingHands who are willing to facilitate a local group in the different regions. · BIG Operational Assistance. BIG needs HelpingHands who can assist in the office with administrative tasks, stakeholder management, specific campaigns and recreational activities. This includes writing, editing and layout tasks for BIG publications. · BIG Management Committee. BIG needs HelpingHands to serve on its Management Committee. · Financial Assistance. BIG cannot function without adequate financial resources. BIG needs funding to cover its operational costs, printing costs for its information programme, research projects and an external awareness campaign in 2007/08. To fund these activities BIG HelpingHands can: Sign a monthly debit order for R100-00, R150-00 or R200-00; or donate a single amount of their choice. BIG will issue Article 18A tax-receipts for monetary donations to the BIG Fund.
